Hollis Seniors meet every Thursday at the Lawrence Barn Community Center.  Gathering starts at 11 AM and Meals on Wheels is usually brought in at noon.  A program usually follows the meal or members stay and socialize, playing games of their choice.

May 2014

Say Welcome to Lori Dwyer!

Please NOTE the change to our “group e-mailing” address (which is above).  Use the new address when you want to send out a “group” announcement.

We began our April meeting with a jazz concert presented by the HBMS “Knight Jazz” group. This group, of approximately 21 musicians led by Mr. William Hinkle, performed jazz numbers ranging from the 1930’s to the present day.  All members and guests, including some members “swinging” on the dance floor of the Lawrence Barn, enjoyed a wonderful concert.

The next week we had Bill Defeo present a slide show of “Rafting through the Grand Canyon.” As Bill said, the sights and experience were so outstanding he would do it again.  People do not realize how great the Grand Canyon is until you take a rafting trip through it.

The following week we had Janet Defeo present a slide show on the Acoma Indian Reservation located in New Mexico.  She was able to be an “adjunct” teacher for a week, teaching at the 3rd and 5th grades.  It was an uplifting experience for her and the students.

The last week was our business meeting.  The minutes of the last meeting were read by Bob Fiero and accepted. The Treasurer’s report was read by Nancy Bell and accepted.

New business: All were reminded that we have plans for our summer picnic and our Christmas lunch.  Additionally, it was decided that the seniors would not have a dedicated booth for the Hollis Old Home Days this year.

Activities for the month of May:

-          1 May: Heidi Paine, a former Hollis resident, will talk about her experience of being in a coma and giving back to the community thru her rehab.

-          8 May:  We will have a presentation on Medicaid fraud.

-          15 May:  We will have a summer sing-a-long with Janet, Lois and Kat.

-          20 May:  HBMS lunch.  Call Honi for reservations.

-          22 May:  The Hollis Police Department will present a Q&A session on personal security.

-          26 May:  Memorial Day at the Hollis Town Common.

-          29 May:  The HBHS chorus will sing for us along with our Monthly business meeting and birthday celebrations.

May Birthdays: Nelson Burtt, Betsy Cotton, Becky Crowther, Rita DiClemente, Phyllis Houle, and John Ogrodowczyk,

If we forgot someone, it is because you didn’t provide your birth month for our database.  Please see Bob Fiero to update your information.

General:

1.      We have a business meeting the last Thursday of every month (except Thanksgiving).  Be sure to attend.

2.      The SVTC bus service has gotten better.  If you have any questions, call Nashua transportation at 880-0100 Ext 1.  And you can visit the SVTC web site at www.SouheganRides.org.  And if you have not registered with the “blue bus”, please do so by calling the above number.

3.      Senior notification.  The Hollis communication center has a procedure in place by which seniors can be registered for Health and Welfare phone calls.  Forms to register for this service are available from the Communications Center.

Future Senior Activities:

1.      The “Classics Tap Dancers” will put on a show for us.

2.       A presentation on “lobster catching.”

3.      We will be starting our “pizza” Thursdays during the summer months.

4.      In July and August, we will not be having “Meals of Wheels.”  But, we will be having lunch at various local restaurants.

5.      Senior Picnic:  19 June 2014, with entertainment.

6.      Christmas party: 11 December 2014 at the Radisson Hotel.

Please let me know your suggestions.

Honi
