May 2012

The month of April started with an exercise class, a movie and of course Blood Pressure checks.  The exercise class was well received and is well attended.  Keep in mind the exercises are via video so we can set our own pace.  Come to the “Barn” at 10:30 every Thursday and stretch your limbs.

At the next meeting our local Chiropractor, Dr. Morgan MacBean, D.C., presented the benefits of chiropractic care for seniors.  It was a great class and really hit home with the importance of keeping your body and your spine “healthy.”

On the following Tuesday several of us had lunch at the HBMS.  Seriously, this is a great time for seniors and middle schoolers to sit down and have lunch together and “swap” school stories.  The kids really enjoy this exchange.

We had Nurse Mark talk to us about the dangers of diabetes at our next meeting.  Mark covered the differences between Type I and Type II diabetes.  He also discussed, in detail, how we all can stop, or at least hold off, the damage that this disease can cause.

Then at the following Wednesday, 14 of our seniors took a trip the Pequot Indian Museum via Curmudgeon and Friends Travels.  Jay was our bus driver and made the trip very easy and enjoyable.  (Nothing beats someone else doing the driving.)

We finished up the month with our business meeting.  We discussed possible future outings and events to include our June picnic and our Christmas Party in December.  We also covered many possible tours over the next several months to include visiting the Art Museum in Manchester, the Military Museum in Wolfeboro, a possible trip on the SS Mount Washington, etc.

Activities for the month of May:

-          3 May:  MOW+ Blood Pressure + Movie + Exercise class

-          10 May:  Rieke class and demonstration by Laura.

-          15 May:  School lunch at the HBMS.  Call Honi to confirm your attendance.

-          17 May:  MaryAnn Swanzey will present her “bio.”

-          24 May:  TBD

-          28 May:  Memorial Day

-          31 May:  Business Meeting

May Birthdays:  Rita DiClemente, Phyllis Houle and Madelyn Monahan.

General:

1.      We have a business meeting the last Thursday of every month (except Thanksgiving).  Be sure to attend.

2.      The SVTC bus service has gotten better.  If you have any questions, call Nashua transportation at 880-0100 Ext 1.  And you can visit the SVTC web site at www.SouheganRides.org.  And if you have not registered with the “blue bus”, please do so by calling the above number.

3.      Senior notification.  The Hollis communication center has a procedure in place by which seniors can be registered for Health and Welfare phone calls.  Forms to register for this service are available from the Communications Center.

Future Senior Activities of interest.

1.      FLASH:  Our annual picnic, with entertainment, is 14 June at the “Barn.”  We need a “head count, so please call Honi to let her know if you will be attending.

2.      How about a trip to the NH State House to see and hear our State Reps at work?  (We now have one of our own as a State Representative)

3.      How about a trip to the WW II Wright museum in Wolfeboro, NH?  It has been updated and a great place to visit.  Maybe during May/June 2012?

4.      How about having a TV weather person come and speak to us?

5.      We are going to investigate the possibility of combining some future events with the Nashua Seniors group.

6.      We are looking into a visit to the Army Museum at Ft. Devens.

7.      Our annual Christmas party will be December 13th.  So mark your calendars.

8.      How about a trip to the Apple store at Pheasant Lane mall to get some “hands on experience” of the latest technology?  No cost.  And then maybe lunch at some of the new restaurants located there?

9.      Antique car show, 10 June, at the Tulley Dealership.

Please let me know your comments and wishes.

Honi Glover
