March 2014

Please NOTE the change to our “group e-mailing” address (which is above).  Use the new address when you want to send out a “group” announcement.

Oh, by the way, membership dues are DUE.  See Bob Fiero (membership data) and Nancy Bell (treasurer).  If you cannot attend a meeting, just send your dues to the above address, care of Honi at the 52 Nevins Road address.

We started February with an 1889 visit to Hollis by BG Joshua Chamberlain, in full uniform, of the famed 20th Maine Volunteers.  BG Chamberlain, portrayed by Rev. Bob MacFarlane, had stopped in Hollis to speak to the Veterans that participated in the Civil War and the battle of Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg.   BG Chamberlain (Rev MacFarlane) provided an outstanding “snapshot” of Civil War history and his own career as Governor of Maine.  What a presentation!

We next had a cancelation of the Valentine’s Day sing-along due to one of our frequent winter storms.  There is always next year!

At our next meeting, we had a “scam” presentation by Norma Boyce from AARP.  Norma detailed many scams that are out there that seem to target seniors.  She also provided a contact list of key organizations that you can contact if you believe you received a scam.  Check with Honi if you wish to get a copy of this list.  A quick and immediate point of contact is our Hollis police department.  If you receive what you think is a scam, and you don’t know who to contact, call our Hollis Police Department.

The following week was our business meeting.  The minutes of the last meeting were read by Bob Fiero and accepted. The Treasurer’s report was read by Nancy Bell and accepted.

New business:  There was a discussion and vote to have the next Christmas party at the Radisson Hotel on 11 December 2014.  It was approved to expend funds for our June 2014 picnic, to include entertainment. There was a reminder of the various upcoming school and town meetings scheduled in March.  Remember to VOTE.
