Hollis Seniors meet every Thursday at the Lawrence Barn Community Center.  Gathering starts at 11 AM and Meals on Wheels is usually brought in at noon.  A program usually follows the meal or members stay and socialize, playing games of their choice.

March 2012

We already have added some new members this year.  They are: Paul Fimbel, Phil Ripley, Linda Monahan and Cheryl Piekarski.  When you see them, say “Hi”.  (Did I leave out any other “newbie’s?)

We had a great and varied February.  To start, we had our “first of the month” activities which included the “Flight over New Hampshire.”  If you missed this movie you really missed some spectacular views of our wonderful state.

At the next meeting Fire Chief Rick Towne and members of the Hollis Fire and Rescue made a presentation about the history of “fire-fighting.” Chief Town (who is a 3rd generation Hollis Fire Fighter) and his members covered how fire fighting as evolved over the years starting with bucket-brigades to the modern pumpers and ladders.  Very interesting.

We had a “swinging” time at our next meeting.  We had the Hollis-Brookline Middle School Jazz Band serenade us.  We had a great concert that was performed by approximately 25 young, talented musicians.  Members so enjoyed the show that several got up and danced along with the music.  We definitely will try to bring them back.  Take a look at the attached pictures.  There are more on our web site.

We finished up the month with our business meeting.  We discussed possible future outings and events.

Activities for the month of March:

-          1 Mar:  MOW+ Blood Pressure + Movie

-          8 Mar:  Harold & Helga Coss will present their biographies

-          13 Mar:  Town voting

-          14 Mar:  Town meeting

-          15 Mar:  Basil Mason will present his biography

-          22 Mar:  Belton Hearing Aids will provide a free “tune up and cleaning.”

-          29 Mar:  Business meeting.

March Birthdays:  Denise April, Jim Belanger, Nancy Bell, Joe DeFilippo, Evelyn Muzzey, Betty Rudinsky and Erlinda Smith.

General:

1.      REMINDER:  Dues are now due!  Please see Basil for payment.  If you have not paid your dues, consider this to be your last “paper” newsletter.

2.      We have a business meeting the last Thursday of every month (except Thanksgiving).  Be sure to attend.

3.      The SVTC bus service has gotten better.  If you have any questions, call Nashua transportation at 880-0100 Ext 1.  And you can visit the SVTC web site at www.SouheganRides.org.  And if you have not registered with the “blue bus”, please do so by calling the above number.

4.      We asked the “blue bus” if they could pick up several members on Thursday for our meetings.  The answer is “YES!”  We currently have 1 member who is using the blue bus service to attend our meetings.  Are there others who are interested?

5.      Senior notification.  The Hollis communication center has a procedure in place by which seniors can be registered for Health and Welfare phone calls.  Forms to register for this service are available from the Communications Center.

Future Senior Activities of interest.

1.      How about a trip to the NH State House to see and hear our State Reps at work?  (We now have one of our own as a State Representative)

2.      How about a trip to the WW II Wright museum in Wolfeboro, NH.  It has been updated and a great place to visit.  Maybe during May 2012?

3.      How about having a TV weather person come and speak to us?

4.      We are going to investigate the possibility of combining some future events with the Nashua Seniors group.

5.      We are looking into a visit to the Army Museum at Ft. Devens.

6.      Look for the AARP Driver Safety classes to offered in April 2012

Please let me know your comments and wishes.
