Hollis Seniors meet every Thursday at the Lawrence Barn Community Center.  Gathering starts at 11 AM and Meals on Wheels is usually brought in at noon.  A program usually follows the meal or members stay and socialize, playing games of their choice.

June 2014

Say “Welcome” to Kat McGhee, our newest member.

We began our May meeting with Honi giving us a history of the Lawrence Barn.  She described how the “barn” came to be to include its finding, its dismantling, its storage, its fund raising and ultimately, its “barn raising” to what we have now.  This was a most interesting and historical presentation given by Honi who was a key member in getting the Lawrence Barn up and running.

Next we had a presentation by AARP representatives on Medicare Fraud.  Because the Medicare program is so large, the possibility of fraud seems to be everywhere.  The representative stressed the importance of all of us (most of us seniors) needinh to really, really review our Medicare statements whenever we have medical appointments.  Seniors also need to be aware of ID theft that can go along with Medicare Fraud.  Nothing is easy.

The following week we had a sing along with Kat and Janet.  We sang a whole bunch of oldies and goodies and had a “singing” good time.

The next week was a pass.

The last week was our business meeting AND a concert by the HBHS senior choir led by Julie Carbone.  The choir preformed selections ranging from modern to spiritual to oldies.  They can come back every week!

After the concert, we had our business meeting. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Bob Fiero and accepted. The Treasurer’s report was read by Nancy Bell and accepted.

New business: All were reminded that we have plans for our summer picnic (19 June with entertainment) and our Christmas lunch.  Also, there will be NO Meals-On-Wheels during June, July and August.  But, during the first week of those months, we will be having pizza.   And some weeks, we will be dining out at local restaurants.  The remaining weeks you are to bring your own lunch.

Activities for the month of June:

-          5 Jun: The Classic Tap Dancers will perform for us.

-          12 Jun:  A presentation of Gluten Free diets.

-          19 Jun:  Our picnic with entertainment.

-          26 Jun:  A lobster presentation, or how to catch and eat lobsters.

During July:  we will have a lunch at the Olive Garden

During August:  we will have lunch at the Long Horn.

June Birthdays:  Ginnie Brown, Claire Helfman, Noreen Morley, Don Ryder, Sharon Shay, and Mary Willis

July Birthdays: Pamela Arpin, Dolores Ballou, Janet Defeo, Bonnie Derek, Bernie Madiera, Basil Mason, Sheryl Ryder, and Pat Walsh

August Birthdays:  Lillian Alpaugh, Louie Bell, Clarke Davis, Ken Labaugh, Terry McKay, Mary Mellgard, Jane Nichols, Richard Nichols, Cheryl Piekarski, Mary Ann Swanzey, and Virginia Wilkins

If we forgot someone, it is because you didn’t provide your birth month for our database.  Please see Bob Fiero to update your information.

General:

1.      We have a business meeting the last Thursday of every month (except Thanksgiving).  Be sure to attend.

2.      The SVTC bus service has gotten better.  If you have any questions, call Nashua transportation at 880-0100 Ext 1.  And you can visit the SVTC web site at www.SouheganRides.org.  And if you have not registered with the “blue bus”, please do so by calling the above number.

3.      Senior notification.  The Hollis communication center has a procedure in place by which seniors can be registered for Health and Welfare phone calls.  Forms to register for this service are available from the Communications Center.

Future Senior Activities:

1.      The “Classics Tap Dancers” will put on a show for us.

2.       A presentation on “lobster catching.”
