June 2013

Say Hello to our new members:  Richard (Dick) and Barbara Davis, and Becky Crowther.  Welcome!

We have decided to publish the minutes of our monthly meetings. In the essence of brevity, we will publish a synopsis of the monthly meetings. Detailed minutes can be obtained from our Secretary, Bob Fiero.

Synopsis of meeting of 30 May.

Meeting opened at 12:50PM with invocation and Pledge of Allegiance.  Minutes of April meeting read and approved. Treasurer’s report read and approved.  Activities Chair Pam Arpin reviewed several programs for future use.  Participation in the upcoming Hollis Old Home Day was discussed and it was approved to have a Hollis Seniors information booth set up for HOHD.  A deposit of $150.00 was approved for our Christmas party, to be held on 12 Dec 2013 at the Crown Plaza. Watch for additional information.  Ruth Coleman will be 100 years old and members were asked to provide a “card shower” for Ruth.  There will be no Meals On Wheels during June, July, and August.  There will NOT be a 4 July 2013 meeting.  Plan on eating at local restaurants during July and August.  There will be no newsletter for July and August, so check your email for future activities.  Meeting adjourned at 1:20PM

We opened our may program with a presentation by Joe Caufield, Esq. and his “allusions.”  We all wanted to know how he was able to perform some of his tricks, especially the “sequence of cards.”   And several ladies wanted to keep his “big ruby” that was created from small stones.

At our next meeting we “clowned” around with Cherrie and Corkey.  Clowns will never go away and will always entertain the young and the old.

At our 3rd meeting Sandy from the Hollis Fire and Rescue explained CPR procedures and how to use the AED.  We see AED’s around, but just how do you use one?  It was great to go over the procedures of how to use this life-saving device.

At our next meeting, we had several veterans display some of their war service memorabilia.  They also participated in a round-table discussion of their service time.  It was a great introduction to the upcoming Memorial Day.

At our last meeting we were serenaded by the Hollis-Brookline High School Honors Choir, led by Julie Carbone.  These 21 young singers were outstanding.  Songs ranged from the modern to the spiritual to the swing.  What a way to enjoy your luncheon meal.

1.      We have a business meeting the last Thursday of every month (except Thanksgiving).  Be sure to attend.

2.      The SVTC bus service has gotten better.  If you have any questions, call Nashua transportation at 880-0100 Ext 1.  And you can visit the SVTC web site at www.SouheganRides.org.  And if you have not registered with the “blue bus”, please do so by calling the above number.

3.      Senior notification.  The Hollis communication center has a procedure in place by which seniors can be registered for Health and Welfare phone calls.  Forms to register for this service are available from the Communications Center.

Future Senior Activities of interest.

1.      How about having a TV weather person come and speak to us?

2.      We are working on a trip to the Apple store at Pheasant Lane mall to get some “hands on experience” of the latest technology?  No cost.  And then maybe lunch at some of the new restaurants located there?
