January 2014

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!

Oh, by the way, membership dues are due.  See Bob Fiero (membership data) and Nancy Bell (treasurer).

And WELCOME new members:  Mary Mellgard and Betsy Cotton.

Back in December 2013, we had several events.  To start off, we had a “remembering the Viet Nam period” discussion.  Several of our Viet Nam era members recounted their experiences, ranging from Viet Nam itself to life in the “states”. Without a doubt, this period was a difficult time for our nation as a whole.

We next had our Christmas/Winter Party at the Crown Plaza.  The food was great, the people were great (48 members attended) and our entertainment, provided by our very own  “John O” was outstanding.  A round of thanks goes to Nancy Bell for arranging this party.  Take a look at our web site for several pictures of the festivities.

The following week was our business meeting and election of new officers.  The minutes of the last meeting were read by Donna Wardlow and accepted. The Treasurer’s report was read and accepted.

New business: Members were asked to think about paying professional people to provide talks on various subjects.   Currently, various people and organizations provide most programs and talks as a “community service”.  The feeling by the members is that we should consider this on a case-by-case basis.  There was also discussion of having “repeat” organizations presenting their programs, such as fire/home safety, home care, etc.  Members indicated this is good, but having more “fun programs” should be included in the schedule.  The idea of presenting a small scholarship to a HBHS senior was brought up.  Members were asked to give this some thought.

Voting:  The slate of officers was presented and voting was taken by secret ballot. Officers elected were:

President:  Honi Glover

Vice Present:  Donna Wardlow

Secretary:  Bob Fiero

Treasurer:  Nancy Bell.

Congratulations to your 2014 officers.

If we forgot someone, it is because you didn’t provide your birth month for our database.  Please see Bob Fiero to update your information.

General:

1.      We have a business meeting the last Thursday of every month (except Thanksgiving).  Be sure to attend.

2.      The SVTC bus service has gotten better.  If you have any questions, call Nashua transportation at 880-0100 Ext 1.  And you can visit the SVTC web site at www.SouheganRides.org.  And if you have not registered with the “blue bus”, please do so by calling the above number.

3.      Senior notification.  The Hollis communication center has a procedure in place by which seniors can be registered for Health and Welfare phone calls.  Forms to register for this service are available from the Communications Center.

Future Senior Activities of interest.

1.      We are working on upcoming winter activities.

2.       In February we are looking at officials talking about senior “scams” and classes for the NEW AARP “Drive Safe” program and a February “sing along.”

Please let me know your suggestions.

Honi
