February 2014

Please NOTE the change to our “group e-mailing” address (which is above).  Use the new address when you want to send out a “group” announcement.

Oh, by the way, membership dues are due.  See Bob Fiero (membership data) and Nancy Bell (treasurer)

We started January 2014 with several great events.  To begin, we had a “green” presentation by Joni from the Hollis Transfer station.  Joni explained in detail just how recycling saves the Town of Hollis lots of dollars, and additionally saves the environment.  As an example, the translucent milk jugs are currently getting $450 per ton.  All the money earned by the transfer station goes directly back to the Town of Hollis.  This is a win-win for every town citizen.  So the word is, “recycle.”

We next had a presentation by Lise Hildebrandt of the “Clean House, Clean Heart” organization.  This group helps people who are in various stages of transition, from moving to new living arrangements to providing help in just simply getting rid of all that “stuff.”  They provide guidance in the 2 sides of “cleaning” that is, the practical side and the emotional and spirit side. For more information you can call Lise at 603-724-7359 or visit their web site at www.cleanhousecleanheart.com.

At our next meeting, we had a wonderful, tasteful treat.  Debi DePaulis, owner of the Hollis Chocolate Barn, provided a demonstration of chocolate making.  Debi explained the various types of coco beans, how they are prepared, and how she makes all her delicious truffles, crèmes, barks and other chocolate sweets. And the beauty of this class was that we all got to sample the results of her handicraft.  Just sweetness!

The following week was our business meeting.  The minutes of the last meeting were read by Bob Fiero and accepted. The Treasurer’s report was read by Nancy Bell and accepted.

New business: There were only minor issues discussed at the business meeting.  There was an emphasis on paying dues, discussing future activities and being informed that 11new members have joined in the past several months.  It was approved to expend funds for our June 2014 picnic, to include entertainment.

Activities for the month of February:

-          6 Feb:  Pastor Bob MacFarlane will portray BG Joshua Chamberlain (Civil War fame).

-          13 Feb:  Valentine sing-a-long with Janet Chaney and Cat McKee.

-          20 Feb:  Pat Lyons from AARP will discuss the latest “scams.”

-          25 and 26 Feb:  AARP safe driving classes here at the barn from 9AM-12Noon each day.  This will be a NEW program and now only 6 hours long.  See Andy to register.

-          27 Feb:  Foot clinic and Monthly business meeting.

February Birthdays: Harold Coss, Bill Defeo, Alex Gondola, Lois Keohan, Jackie Proctor, Paul Van Blairgan and Preston Walsh.

If we forgot someone, it is because you didn’t provide your birth month for our database.  Please see Bob Fiero to update your information.

General:

1.      We have a business meeting the last Thursday of every month (except Thanksgiving).  Be sure to attend.

2.      The SVTC bus service has gotten better.  If you have any questions, call Nashua transportation at 880-0100 Ext 1.  And you can visit the SVTC web site at www.SouheganRides.org.  And if you have not registered with the “blue bus”, please do so by calling the above number.

3.      Senior notification.  The Hollis communication center has a procedure in place by which seniors can be registered for Health and Welfare phone calls.  Forms to register for this service are available from the Communications Center.

Future Senior Activities of interest.

1.      We are working on upcoming winter and early spring activities.

2.      Senior Picnic:  19 June 2014
