December 2014

What a Thanksgiving!!  I hope everyone was able to enjoy thanksgiving.  Now we know how the Pilgrims felt – no electricity!!

And say hi to a new member:  Dee Haddad!!

We started November with Honi giving us a “reflection” of what it was like living in Hollis during WWII.  As our meeting was just before Veterans Day, her experiences during this time of the 1940’s and wartime was very appropriate.  Honi discussed having to use ration cards, various food shortages, watching for enemy aircraft, buying war bonds and many other life adventures during this time.  She presented a great historical perspective of the WWII era here in Hollis.

The following week we had Dr. John Dagianis from Nashua Eye Associates present a detailed discussion on eye care.  Dr. Dagianis discussed the latest advancements in eye care, glasses that will help with night driving and medical advancements in treating macular degeneration.  He also chaired a question and answer session from the audience concerning eye care.  This was a most informative session.

On our last meeting of the month (as we do not meet on Thanksgiving day) we had our cake and ice cream social.  Plus, we witnessed the presentation of the Boston Post Cane to Paul Fimbel.  The Boston Post Cane is presented to a town’s most senior citizen.  The presentation was made by Mark Le Deux (chairman of the Hollis Town Selectmen) and Troy Brown (town Administrator).  Members of Mr. Fimbel’s family were also present for the ceremony.  (See photos).  We finished up the day with a great sing-a-long led by Janet Chaney.

During December we will be having our Christmas Lunch and later in the month we will be voting for new officers.  As a reminder:

1.      We have a business meeting the last Thursday of every month (except Thanksgiving).  Be sure to attend.

2.      The SVTC bus service has gotten better.  If you have any questions, call Nashua transportation at 880-0100 Ext 1.  And you can visit the SVTC web site at www.SouheganRides.org.  And if you have not registered with the “blue bus”, please do so by calling the above number.

3.      Senior notification.  The Hollis communication center has a procedure in place by which seniors can be registered for Health and Welfare phone calls.  Forms to register for this service are available from the Communications Center.

Future Senior Activities:

1.      We have started our Middle-School lunches again.

2.       In November look for our Veterans’ Day presentation.
