April 2010

Say Hello to some new members:  Sheila Carrier and Bob Fiero.  Welcome!

We had a great March with a whole bunch of activities.  Our activities ranged from having our first Seniors Treasure Yard Sale, to the High School Social Studies class coming to one of our lunches and interviewing the seniors about how “they” grew up in the 30’s and 40’s.  What was it like during the Depression and the start of WW II?  Talk about a real life history lesson.  Both the Students and the Seniors thoroughly enjoyed this event.  And as to our Treasure Yard Sale, it was a TREMENDOUS success!  Many thanks to all who participated and donated.

Additionally, we had our first movie showing and it was very well attended.  And the popcorn was great.  Note, we will be showing movies again.  Look at the “upcoming events.” We also had lunch at the HBMS.  It would be great if more seniors attended this event.  It is a great time to talk to the  “younger generation.”

Our “pot-luck” lunch at the end of March was pizza.  It seems the end of month “pot lucks” are well received.  So we plan on continuing this event, with a “pot luck” the end of 1 month and pizza the end of the next month.  And remember, the last Thursday of the month is our business meeting.

Thanks to our very successful Treasure Sale, the Hollis Seniors voted to donate $500.00 towards the support of the SVTC (the Blue Bus).  The “Blue Bus” service is a worthwhile investment for seniors and all citizens in our area.

We are already planning for our summer picnic.  Right now it looks like the “Boot-Scootin-Boomers” are going to be our entertainment.

Activities for the month of April:

-          1 Apr:  MOW, blood pressure and movie-time.  This month it is “The Quiet Man” with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara

-          8 Apr:  MOW Bill DeFeo will describe their rafting trip down the Colorado River.

-          15 Apr:  MOW and TBD

-          20 Apr: Lunch at the HBMS (11:15) Cost is $3.00

-          22 Apr: Sing along with “Elmar and Friends.”

-          29 Apr: Appreciation Day and Pot Luck.  Chance to say “thank-you” to all the volunteers who serve us, along with the monthly business meeting.

April Birthdays: Frank Ballou, Honi Glover, Norma Gundersen, Trudi Luthi, Bill McKay and Betty Stewart.

Other Senior Activities of interest.

1.      There is some discussion about putting together a Hollis Seniors Time Capsule.  Think about it.  More discussion later.

2.      How about a trip to the Portsmouth Harbor this summer?

3.      How about a trip to the NH State House to see and hear our State Reps at work?

4.      Don’t forget to visit our Hollis Library.

5.      How about some more “show and tells”

6.      How about having a TV weather person come and speak to us?

7.      Let’s go to the movies!  We are ready to show movies after our meals.  And, we will be serving popcorn!

Please let me know your comments and wishes.
